I've been reading the forms for a bit now, and it's greatly helped me with my 59 gmc truck. I decided to join and share some of my progress. This is my first restore ever, I'm very motivated and excited.
So far with help and how to instructions from the site I've been able to do all the work myself. I recently got the engine running almost like factory now thanks to a thread about distributor point set and dwell settings. I was on the fence about even posting, but I figured a forum that's helped me this much needs to know how valuable a tool it is to many like myself. So here it is!
My wife purchase thus truck as an early birthday present for me back in Jan. Being mechanically inclined (or so I thought) this project would be a breeze and we would be cruising it in no time. I drove it home the first day we bought it (some 50 miles) and bot was that a mistake. My idle mixture screw had fallen off and the truck would die at every stop light, I had to push in the starter while pressing the accelerator at the same time. The truck drove like carp and the engine was very unresponsive. (I figured all old cars were that terrible) on my way home I kept getting thumbs up and smiles from strangers. It was a nice feeling that was quickly over come from the anxiety of keeping the truck strait on the road while trying to keep the rpms up at a light so that it wouldn't turn off on me.
Half way home my fuel gauge drops to E and stops working, my water temp gauge I realize is stuck at "c" and when I open my vents to let some air in I'm blasted with leaves and old debris in my face. Yeah my first driving experience with this truck wasn't the best. I even began to question myself (did I really want this truck) About 1 mile from home the idle mixture screw completely falls out the car back fires in an extravagant cloud of smoke and my truck is dead in the middle of a busy intersection.
Well it must have been that old truck, and a mixture of pitty two gentlemen jump out of their own cars and help me push it to a parking lot. I Google the symptom and Stovebolt comes up I can't remember exactly where but the thread I read talks about the idle mixture screw. I screw it in and to my surprise the truck fires right up! I drive the home park it for the night and begin to think maybe this old truck ain't that bad after all.

Love hate? Yep. I hate it....but I love it. The sweat, tears, blood, busted knuckles, cursing, banged head, pinched fingers, burns, busted tools, new tools, late nights, money, all that stuff instantly fades away when you get a thumbs up driving an old truck that you revived from the dead. I LOVE IT!
Great story, even better looking truck, and please keep the progress updates coming. I really like the look of that GMC. This is the best forum I am a member of. Great layout, friendly people, and I’ve never been left stranded on a topic.
welcome to the site! My 69 Barracuda likes to blow all manner of evil on me the first time or two I have the vents open each summer. Actually, it is not the first or 2nd time, it normally takes a while for it to dry out enough and things to get loose and then, boom! fir needles and stuff everywhere!
