I put my slightly improved health to the test on Sunday . I had the right axle break on the truck , at 70kph!

It took about 50meters to stop and was one of those times I wished I had a dash cam , as the rear wheel (with half an axle attached) trundled on by me .

After calming myself for a while , I waited for a friend to come past , I was sure one would , and yes some 40mins later , smile .

He took me home and we gathered the necessary parts and tools .

So the axle change was easy , getting the truck up off the ground was more difficult , then I found the U bolts had been ground away to almost nothing , so I wrapped a chain around the spring and axle and tip toed home (25km)

Got new U bolts made today and fitted them .

ALL GOOD ................ phew!

Small panel damage to rear fender still to repair .

Thanks Martin , yep , lucky the truck did not end up on its side .. especially as it was top heavy with the camper on .. that would have been untidy .

Not a bad ending to a potentially terrible failure. May the greater good luck gods continue to win out over the bad luck demons.

Converting a military GMC 302 to full flow oil system. Drilled and tapped oil passage and tapped and installed a plug per the inliners guidance started reassembly of bottom end. Drilled steam holes on an 848 head for installation on a 62 Chevy 261.

Well, I had a set of 4 new Goodyear Wrangler tires installed yesterday at Walley World. Paid to have 4 new valve stems installed as well, but while watching the tech go about his business I noticed that he wasn’t installing the new stems. I inquired why and he said the work order didn’t include them. Off to the office I went to ask what was going on. She showed him that I was correct, so back to the truck he went. In no time at all he was back in the front office to explain that there were no valve stems in the shop of the type necessary and specified in the work order. The assistant manager was summoned and, after being explained the situation, asked me if I could go out to another store and buy some and bring them back so they could finish the installation. I told him my only transportation was up on his rack. I suggested we could get for stems from Discount Tire, but I had no way of getting there. The manager quickly volunteered to drive me there in his Jeep, which he did. We quickly purchased 4 of the correct size valve stems, and he dropped me off at my house on his way back to Walmart. My wife and I had a Christmas party to attend an hour away and I was running out of time! He and I had agreed that he would take the stems back and they would finish the job, then would push the truck out into the parking lot, lock it up, and we could stop by on our way back from the party to pay the invoice and drive the truck home. Sure enough, when we got there after the party the truck was where it was supposed to be, and we quickly went to the service desk and settled up. It was a very unconventional way to get a new set of tires, but everything turned out OK in the end.

Finally took off the front passenger side caliper, got new ones , and installed both sides. While the wheels were off, I tried to remove play (it was about 45 degrees total, or 8 inches?) from the steering wheel... Half turn of adjustment screw did the trick.. did the rear cylinders last week. Tried to bleed the brakes and the calipers barely grabbed the rotors.. the dual master cylinder is old, and I need a proportion valve and residual valves, may just replace it. Still gotta rewire the truck, replace rear main seal, adjust valves, check timing.... Maybe next year.
