197? K5 chassis, 454 V8, the TH350 has _zero_ engine braking in any gear, my Son thinks this is normal, I know it is not and is dangerous on a 4X4 that goes down some terribly steep grades .

Where should we begin looking ? .

There is no problem so difficult it cannot be overcome by generous application of brute force & ignorance

Is the torque converter original equipment, or has some sort of high stall speed unit been installed? High-stall converters have a tendency to freewheel in a coasting situation. Also you might check for a worn kickdown band.

The murder victim was drowned in a bathtub full of Rice Krispies and milk.
The coroner blamed the crime on a cereal killer!
