The Stovebolt I6 is a lost cause for real performance but the Inliners have hope now with the GM Atlas 4.2 and now in this months Hot Rod there are two more I6 options that make over 1000hp. One is the Nissan RB engine (think Supra) and the Toyota JZ series. The Aussies are way ahead of us in working with these engines. The article stated that there used to be races at a place called Mt Panorama where the Nissans were banned since no other engine could beat them.

In 1972 when I was stationed on Okinawa I worked on a 1.9 Liter Nissan Skyline single overhead cam inline six that had been factory-prepped for racing at the Tokyo International Speedway. For some reason they chose to run it in a 4-door sedan that had the front end sheet metal stretched a few inches between the front wheels and the cowl to accommodate the longer engine. It ran three Mikuni-Solex side draft 2-barrel carburetors, similar to Webers. A few years later, that same basic engine design got upsized to 2.4 liters and installed in the Datsun 240Z production cars. Those engines ran a 2-carb setup, clones of the British S-U design.

Looked up the specs on a Holden V8 and it has the LS series engine, from the LS3 to the LS9 so running in first place is no surprise. The LS is about all we use anymore since they out perform a SBC in every way. Just great engines.
