A friend of mine just brought home a gorgeous 1953 GMC half ton 5 window. But it's not correct in many ways. The engine casting number says 5845383. I can't find that number anywhere, it is a six cylinder, looks like a 235.

Thanks Tim, the number looks more like a 6 than an 8 but I'm thinking it must be an 8. Did those engines have the 3 threaded holes on each side, thinking for motor mounts? Were those holes there before the Chevy V8?

Wait to hear from someone else.

I am not sure when the side motor mounts started being used on Chevrolet/GMC engines.

An eight cylinder engine became available in late 1955.

Do you mean before the SBC? In 1954?

Is the engine a Chevy or GMC? Chevy's are about 3" shorter than GMC's so if the fan is way short of the radiator, Chevy, if about .75" short of the radiator-GMC. GMC's SN, r side, stamped on pad by starter, start with displacement, I. e. 228xxxxx, etc.

'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

Chevrolet started using the side motor mounts in 1958 on the passenger cars, the trucks still used the front mounts however they did have the bolt hole boss' cast but not used. 1955 thru 1957 SBC V8's did not have the side mount boss'.

I don't know when GMC switched...
