How did the ignition timing adjustment affect your gas mileage? Inquiring minds want to know!

Jerry,
The truck starts, idles and runs just fine and I thought you had things dialed in perfect. However, when I backed off the throttle to pull off the exit, she now backfires through the exhaust. That is a nice feature that helps prevent others from tailgating, but I might back the timing down to 10 and see how that does. I had a BMW following me in VA and when the truck backfired, he backed off a good 100 yards.
MPG went from 12.25 to down to 11.8 but I was driving 5mph faster (60-65 instead of 55-60.)

I appreciate the help. It will be a moot point soon since I have a fresh 230ci going into the truck this summer. 230ci on engine run stand.

I’ll have another chance to adjust things once the new engine goes in.
Jay

I had the same problem of backfiring after I adjusted to eliminate pinging. BUT my gas mileage is still way off. The road mileage average drop from 20mpg to 15 and the in town dropped from 15 to 10mpg. They think it is the rear carb. Hope to figure out by Sept, KC trip. Frustrating.

I just crashed ODSS party, having seen it about it here. I didn't know anyone but I was treated like a lost son by some of the nicest folks I've met in a long time. The 116 mile trip was the farthest the 47 has been away from home in at least 20 years. No problems at all! Many thanks to all who contributed to a very fun event. Thanks for the warm reception. Chip

Chip -- Thanks for coming! I'm sorry I didn't get more of a chance to talk to you, but I thoroughly enjoyed what I did get in. Hope to see you again soon!

Man that looks like a good time. grin
One of these years, I may have to drive the old Alaska Road Commission pickup down to visit you guys. Got an award for the farthest traveled? Heck, I'd even come if there were no award.
I'd bring some Alaskan beer (assuming they let me thru Canada with it, and there's any left by the time I get there.)
The old ARC pickup is still in pieces frown but still having fun putting it together though.

Thanks Jay. Well done as usual. Dang you guys got some stuff done. Is that Jerry's line bore machine I see? A frame off restoration project. Engine on a run stand. Transmission rebuild. Looks like complete rear end rebuild ? Geez I thought you were just drinkin beer and eatin bbq! Why would anybody pay a couple grand for a rebuild? Just get a block cleaned up, honed and load up a rebuild kit, and get the crew to put that sucker together. Reckon we could get a warranty?

Allen,
I am moving to Texas this summer. Maybe we can get a group of bolsters together for a beer and some wrenching.
