I have an interesting block.

The casting number ends in -5911 which is indicative of a late '53- early '54 235. It is wearing a CAR bellhousing and a a smaller clutch assembly. It is a higher-pressure 235 with NO Tenneco sign-shaped oil plate, has the old high water pump of a 216, and had a -5913 head with the 4 valve cover screws. It was originally painted honest-to-goodness BLUE... not grey, not light blue, not orange etc. That blue still shows on the block in places. The original valve cover is here too and it is the later 235 type.

The engine serial number is kind of indistinct (poorly stamped) but it appears to be

0996855 F5

Vinbuster returns this as a 235 built in.... 1960 , no less, in Norwood OH.

An old-style water pump block THAT late???

Replacement engine, or dare I say... Corvette?

Post the castings codes, date codes, and engine serial number (a photo of this, if you can).

Most likely that block has solid/mechanical lifters?

0996855 F5 -- does not match the format of Engine Serial Number sequences in Specification Manuals.
Let's see a photo - maybe it has been added/changed?

You info is correct regarding the date range of the block/head (1953-55 Corvette 235 and various car/truck 1954/55 235).

Casting & Date codes will confirm a lot of speculation.

- If you have to stomp on your foot-pedal starter, either you, or your starter, or your engine, has a problem.
- The 216 and early 235 engine are not "splash oilers" - this is a splash oiler.

UPDATE: The engine # on the tab by the distributor is:

0996855 F54Z

Missed those other characters when looking in bad light conditions. I re-ran it in the Vinbuster and it came back the same result...

BTW tclederman, I still cannot access your site! I finally figured out that the browser and security was the problem that kept me off here for a good while, but your site still won't load either.

I can access tclederman's site with my mobile but not with Firefox on a PC.

Still checking on the particulars of this block. I want to rebuild it unless I can find an early 261 of the similar design. I could do the plate to relocate the low water pump on later models but I really want to to make this thing look more "original".

BTW I didn't really originate this thread, I somehow tried to reply to an older thread by this name and got "credited" as a new thread starter. I knew this engine was definitely not dated as a '49 from the get-go.
