I'm fortunate to have bought a place in the country in an area where prices are high but not insane---yet. My house in Plano is driving me crazy from realtor phone calls. Plano has been one of the highest medium income places for years but now with Toyota, Fed Ex, and some apple sauce company making it their headquarters along with JC Penny, EDS (old name), and several other fortune 500 companies the land/home flippers are going crazy. My all brick 3BR, 2bath, large covered patio with twin grills, fire place, real exposed beam ceilings, and all the other bells and whistles cost me 23 thousand in 1973 when Texas was known as the biggest bargain in home buying but no more.

The house values went up here in 1976-78 when I bought my house. In 1974 it was on the market for 39,000, when I decided to buy out here a bunch of GM workers transferred from Hamilton Ohio. And they were older with houses that were paid for and buying here the house where have the price that they left behind and if you did not get the first bid you did not get the house, so I paid I $58,000 partly because the owner paid full listing for the house next door because that owner was a realtor, promised if they paid full listing for his house he would get full price for theirs. I am still waiting for that big influx. wink

As I wrote the prices here are unreal and unrealistic. My house sits on a 6000 square foot lot. I am 5 minutes from the ocean beaches, have great public transportation and a hospital, cancer clinic and walk-ins all within 5 minutes. The mountains across in Washington State are almost always visible and snow capped. Now that Carol has gone I have thought about moving but where. The location is ideal and the street is very quiet.
I would love to have a few acres and a garage big enough to hold a few vehicles but that won't happen. Overall it is a nice city and the population is under 350,000.

A teacher, but always an apprentice.
Banks have lots of money and are very willing to let you have some! That's how lots of people are so rich and well off, they're in debt over their eyeballs. Like my mom said, "If you don't have the money, you can't have it." Period. Everyone wants the life of luxury, but seriously live within your means people.

Or as my mum used to say "Fur coat and no knickers". It roughly translates to he same thing. grin

I agree wholeheartedly, just who are they trying to impress?

I'll admit my wife and I were late onto the property market but when we took the plunge we didn't overstretch ourselves, this had paid dividends in the long run as we've ridden out some interest rate changes etc while others have fallen at the roadside.
We remain debt free despite me losing my job three years ago and trying to make a go of it myself, with all the financial stresses that can cause.
Thankfully we will be mortgage free in another 6 years and barring any disasters will be much better off as our house has so far doubled in value.

This falls into to our possible future plans for returning to my wifes roots in the South of France,me,our three cats and last but certainly not least,my truck! (Which incidentally I wouldn't have had if we'd bought bigger in the fist place).

My son bought his current house during all that mortgage flim flam. The broker told him he could afford a $360,000 house but he told them politely where they could go. He told them he only wanted to spend $200,000 or less and that he did. It got him a large house in an upscale suburb of Indianapolis. The brokers are not on your side. I never had to do without I had my house paid off 3 times before my divorce and it is paid off now. My wife was looking at $250,000 house just before she divorced me and it would have really messed both I lives. That is why always handled money matters. I bought cars that I liked and drove them from 10 to even 20 years. The only extravagant thing I did was my truck after the divorce. I am now trying to resist the purchase of another hobby car. You did the right thing. As I had said earlier about being in a trap because I could not move without paying more. Well my coffee buddy is a real estate appraiser and said he found me something. On an island about 45 minutes as the crow flies from here (fortunately crows don't have to rely on ferry boats) with 10 acres, 800 feet shoreline on the ocean, a dock and a 3 bedroom house. Asking $1.2 million. Island population is 2000 in winter and about 6000 in summer. I like my privacy but this might be too private.

Even in parts of Canada you would pay way less. I was lucky I got in when I did but of course I can't get out now and stay in the same city.

I'd sell it, move, and buy my own city and a couple of trucks. smile
