235-6. bored 20 over, dual carbs Rochester.b. Mini hei from Langdon's. Thanks for the suggestion about the spark plug. I have a tester that lays on the wire and it lights up if there is electricity going through the wire. And no I will not hold on to it. It looks like a pencil with an angled slot cut out of it, I have had it for years. If I post back tomorrow you will know I survived. wink Couldn't wait. I ran a wire from the plug wire then to a 12volt test light and cranked it no light came on. What would happen if i hooked the wire to the coil wire and just turn the ignition on????

I had a 72 Monte Carlo and had the points distributor changed out for an hei unit. The car would run and then shut off for no reason. Turned out it was a bad distributor. Also check the coil.

Thanks, that is the symptom. I have done all I can. will have to call my mechanic. I thought I had kept the old distributor but after nine years I am not really sure. I looked but did not find it and some parts I gave away.

Too bad about those fancy replacement distributors.

I have never had a problem with standard points/distributors or with the two Pertronix units (6v and 12v) that I have been using for 15+ years. Nonetheless, a spare distributor with adjusted-points is in my "travel kit".
