I was talking to my dentist today and he seems to recall his parents had a 58 GMC with a pontiac V8?

That is correct, GMC used various Olds and Pontiac engines in their trucks, some with a few less cu. in. than their car counterparts.

Hy Guys, from 1955 to 59 American GMC trucks up to and including the 500 series were powered by Pontiac V8s or GMC inline sixes, above the 500 series the power was either an Oldsmobile V8 or GMC inline six engine, hope that clarifies.
