I just got grandpa's '35 Chevy 1 1/2 ton home. With a good cleaning I think I might just leave it as is and not gut and restore it. They are only original once. She's got plenty of patina but I know a lot about some of that wear.

My dilemma is the fenders. It was used to feed cattle for years so there were some rump bumps to the front fenders. Of course that caused cracks in the usual spot at the top of the wheel arch. I need to weld that which will lead to body work and then what to do with paint. I notice that there are Chevies of that era with black fenders and running boards with the body a different color. I haven't seen any red ones that way. Were all red '35's totally red? It's staying original (including its original 207) so having something like that not right will really bother me. It's a departure anyway because I show cars that I have restored completely, but I think this one is staying like it is except for the few fender repairs. Anyone know what the mysterious fender rules were?

You might find the color codes/paint combos in a catalog here:

ALL 1935 Chevrolet's came from the factory painted one color, there were no two tone options available. With that said once the truck was at the dealership all bets were off, they would do whatever it took to make the sale including painting fenders Black!

click on this link and then scroll down to the 1935 trucks and the Medium to Heavy Trucks list. There are several there you can look at for "ideas".

Mike,

Did Chevrolet trucks first have standard black fenders in 1936?

Thanks,

Tim

- The 216 and early 235 engines are not "splash oilers" - this is a splash oiler. [chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com]

I have used a lot of this product from Modern Masters Oxidizing Iron Paint (ME208)

web site http://www.modernmasters.com/landing/architects/brands/me

It's a little time consuming to learn, but once you practice some, you can get an original looking patina that wold fool most who would look at it.

I would even be willing to have you come over to my shop and we could patina the fenders over a weekend. They are only original once and once you start painting on them, it's kinda hard to stop!

I think 1934 was the last year Chevrolet had factory painted Black Fenders standard on all trucks regardless of the body color.

I know through the years the factory did special paint combo's for large Fleet buyers and for the general public, the dealers did whatever it took to make the sale. There are lots of later year examples with black fenders that may be called "factory original" that are really not...
