Have a 5 HP Leeson Motor with plenty hours on it. Will start up but quickly shuts off. Hit the reset switch on the motor and will start back up and repeat. What do you think, bad capacitor? How can I test it? Been running for years in same spot, nothing changed with power, wiring, etc.
Allen Yeah, well, that's just like, you know , your opinion, man - The Dude

Mine 5 HP did the same thing after many years of "hard labor" and it turned out the electric motor was gone. Hope yours is cheaper fix.....Luckily I found a local guy who "stocked" some motors and got one for $200 just before they went up in price!

That's what I'm afraid of Alvin. Dad gave me the compressor after many restorations. Replacement motor at Northern is $400 but I've got my eye on one of those 80 Gal 3 stages at Home Depot for $850.

Allen, the bigger the better! It was about a week before I got mine going and without the air I wondered how in the world I ever got anything finished. I guess we're just in a bigger hurry these days. I was really lucky. A friend told me about a guy who had an electric shop for almost 30 years "just up the road" in a nearby town. Dang if he didn't have one on the shelf that would work and told me "if it gives you any trouble bring it back" and I'll make it right". Don't have many places like that left.
Let us know what you decide. I gave $850 for mine on sale over 12 or 13 years ago. (80gal 5HP 175psi 17.9 cfm at 90psi) I think!

I have the Home Depot 80 gal, 2 stage, belt drive. 230V, Nice. On your motor, it's likely the thermal overload device. "Nothing changed"...... Be sure someone did not stack something near to block air cooling or added a heat source. If not, it's internal heat/resistance that is tripping. I always take apart electric motors before I discard to be sure it's not something simple/obvious.
Watch out for careful drivers!!! I'm away on an ego trip. Will be back on Feb 30. I'm not an Auto Mechanic, but I play one on TV. I charge $0.02 for every opinion and I take Paypal. Plan B is always better than plan A, by definition. I recommend invoking MIL-T-FP41c when machining and fabricating I used to think beer was bad for me, so I gave up thinking. Sometimes no nonsense makes sense, in a sense. You can't teach a new dog old tricks. Honk if you're Amish

You're right Bart, the $850 one is a 3 cylinder single stage, the 2 stage was more like $1150. Dropped by Northern today, and they had the replacement motor in stock....never happens so grabbed it and swapped out the motor. Biggest chore was beating the pulley off the old motor....just kidding boys. Anyway we are back up and running, and will add the old motor to roundtoit list to check out or repaired.
