If I can find an SM318 with OD will it bolt right up to the 283? Are there any other easy auto OD options to consider for around $500? What other adjustments would be necessary to the driveline, etc.? Is there an auto on the floor shifter that looks like a standard stick or go with on the tree?

With OD the designation is SM319. It will bolt to your bellhousing in place of the SM420. I'm not sure if the driveshaft length would be right.
Deve, a member of this site, has designed a floor shifter to be used with an SM319.
