My 69 GMC came with 215/85/16 tires. I'd like to keep the rims but go with a wider tire, and maybe a little taller. What is a reasonable size to not cause issues?

What size truck; 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton? 2wd? 4x4? This will all come into play.

265/75/16s will clear fine in the fenders, and are roughly 32" tall and about 10.5" wide. The only limiting dimension would the wheel width, you would want around an 8-8.5" wheel for that big of a tire.

I just put a set of 235/85/16 tires on a set of those rims for my 53. The rims should handle 245 width easy enough.

EDIT: But... do you have manual or power steering? If it is manual you may want to stay in the narrower widths.

Tried a 245/75 on a Dodge rim. Rim fit, to my surprise, and tire size worked perfect. So now I have a spare rim and know exactly what tires I'm looking for.
