mystery differential carrier in 1955 3800 dually - casting numbers?? #1040664 Mon Jul 07 2014 06:41 PM

Thanks to anyone who can help!

I'm replacing worn out bearings on the rear end on a 55 commercial truck, and the carrier (or maybe the whole axle assembly) does not appear to be original. I found axle bearings OK, but I'm stumped by the carrier.

Casting # 3766686

underneath that casting number is a line with:
slotted screw-head-looking bump pointing at 1 o'clock
the numbers '137'
slotted screw-head-looking bump pointing at 3 o'clock
wagon wheel
the letter 'D'

underneath all that is an 'X'

elsewhere is stamped 'MH608' and a crooked 'D' and another crooked 'H'

I'm just trying to help my local NAPA dude get me the correct bearing kit.

Maybe an early 60s 3/4 ton setup?

This is where a picture is worth near 1,000 words.
Do you have a picture you can link to?

sorry, don't know how to do that.

it's a 14 bolt differential with that casting number. NAPA dude needs year/model of the casting # to order bearing kit.

I'm guessing early 60s 3/4 ton and might just try that.

If all else fails, with the old bearings in hand you should be able to read the numbers and or measure them to match up the new bearings.
