Hi all,

May seem like a silly question, but can my stock 54 Chevrolet 3100 1/2 ton truck (235/manual) be converted to use the same 235 (or 248 engine) with the hydramatic tranny from a GMC? (54' 248 w/ hydramatic) Or is this more trouble than beneficial?

Any feedback and/or comments would be great! Thanks.

I think the GMC engine is longer.

I know the GMC engine is longer. The Hydra-Matic cab is different as is the transmission mount.

Can it be done? Yes. Is it worth the effort? That is for you to decide.

Chevy and GMC engines, crossmembers, linkage, and shift mechanisms are different. I converted a 54 Chevy 3 speed to a H-M but I bought a 54 Chevy H-M rolling chassis and basically put my body on it. As Cletis mentioned, the cab is different between the manual trans and the auto but after finding the H-M trans cover, the cab was an easy trim to fit it.
