What is a Veteran?

Thank you to all our Veterans. Please keep them, their families and the sacrifices they have made, in your thoughts as we celebrate the holidays.

Our "Sir Links-A-Lot" (Bruce Michaels, MSgt, USAF) sent us this powerful presentation, If I Die Before You Wake. It's a moving testimony to our service men and women!

Bruce K sent "Let's Say Thanks," a program started by Xerox for folks to send free, personalized cards (designed by children) to U.S. troops serving overseas.

Busyness around the Virtual Garage
IRWIPI '07 Photo Contest   The Forum's new look!   New Staff - UBB Gumshoe!

December 3 is the deadline for submissions. Come see the photos that have been submitted thus far. Check the details and get your submission in quickly!

Thanks to our prize donors (here's what's in store) for supporting this annual contest:

We LOVE it.
We HATE it.
Why did you do this?
It's about time you got up to speed.

It was an interesting month to say the least!

The new UBB software was installed the weekend of October 26. By that Sunday afternoon, we felt it was "good enough" to open the doors. Since then, we continue to tweak it. It'll probably take another month but we felt it worked well enough to be available to help people with their truck projects.

Many thanks to those who donated to help purchase the software. Many thanks to those who have been helping others find their way around the "new look." A HUGE THANKS to Paul Schmehl (and Mrs. Schmehl) for HOURS and HOURS of work getting it all installed and running. The Geek (with help of others like Bill LePage and Don McLendon) is still hard at work pulling pieces together. And Peggy's trying to stay out of it so that she doesn't muck too much up!

And John? He disappeared into the back 40 ...

With all the commotion of the new UBB, we have a new volunteer to help out in the IT Shortbus. Don "down2sea" McLendon has been doing a lot of research (in the UBB forums) and has been taking taskers from us to find out how to modify the forum to our liking. (Anything can be done, it's just a matter of finding out what to do to which file(s).

So, Don will be posting a Tip of the Week in the Shortbus to help folks work their thru the new design.

Searching the UBB

First order of business, Don prepared a UBB Tech Tip on how to use the Search feature in the new Forum. We've got it in pdf format so that you can print it out and keep it handy.

We think it'll come in very handy!

It figgers ...
So, we thought the site would be a little slow in October. With fall, change in the weather, change in the forums (how do you say "FRUSTRATION!"), some of the last shows, etc. But ... guess we were wrong!

2008 Calendars       On-going Saga

We've had some nice submissions for the 2008 Calendars. Peggy got the first one up (LOVESTRUCK) with a nice display of old iron. Lori66 has a draft of a '60-66 calendar that should be done soon. John has the Art Bolt and Big Bolts calendars done. Check the photo submission criteria and send your's in. We'll use it if it works!

We have a nice stack of smaller images that we'll use in a "quad" calendar (four images to a page). Peg is wanting some fun truck sayings to put on her version.

We hope to be able to still produce a Working Bolts calendar (like last year) and we are always open to some great shots. Besides the truck itself, the posturing of the truck makes a big difference. So ... give it a try.

To see the trucks already in the three calendars (LOVESTRUCK, Art Bolts and Big Bolts), check in the Hoo-ya shoppe. They are all on display.

And don't forget, we'll be happy to make up your personalized calendar. Check the Hoo-ya link to see John Schommer's 1952 Chevy 3/4-Ton. He's got some great photos!

We have the continuing saga from Steve "Builder" VandenBerg (our Triple Dog Dare hero). This is an epic tale of retrieving a 1969 Corvette, you can see. So, we all now know that he was crazy BEFORE we met him!

We are up to Part V (Let me tell you about Parts Chicks) and maybe we are half-way there! You just can't keep some Stovebolters still!

So, if you've got some of this white stuff around your place already, pull up the laptop and read on!

This is Bart Tilton's truck ... somewhere under there! With all the snow storms going on about now, maybe we'll get some others!

Lots O' Links !
And a few testimonials

Up to 674 links now. Thanks to all the folks who send them in. Thanks to Bruce "Sir Links a Lot" Michaels for helping sort through them all!

Chevy Luv truck -- James Mansell recently added his 1965 Chevy LUV truck to the Gallery. Mike "Burgandybolt" Allen answered some of his questions regarding the "luv" name. "In the U.S., they had Toyota and Datsun looking trucks re-badged and sold as entry level smaller pick ups. They were sold from 1972 up til 1980."

Allan Automotive (Calgary) "supplied front end parts, needed springs, shocks, caliper brackets, for my 1950 Chevy 3100. The reason for using Allan Automotive is a bit long winded. The mate Brian who imported the truck out of Calgary had a contact there who found and exported cars for him. I contacted another rodder ( out of the blue) by email and asked if he could organize the parts I needed and get them to the Damien who was exporting for Brian. His name is Allan Gingles. He organized parts through Allan Automotive who delivered them to Damien who in turn exported them to Australia to Brian and eventually to me. How's that for world wide assistance from people that I only know by email and phone contact. Hot Rodding at its best." ~ Andrew "usa050aus" Watson, Melbourne, Australia

Carnut.com. "We traveled through this comprehensive site looking for a colour scheme for my 1950 Chevy 3100. What you see is combination of many trucks photographed on this web site, to the author of that many thanks. The truck was finally painted late last year in a custom mix called Jaffa, with a jet black roof." ~ Andrew "usa050aus" Watson, Melbourne, Australia

RodWorx - "While I was at Cruisin the Coast, I was looking for information on the newer style tail lights (LED type) for the rear of my 1960 GMC 305A V-6. I brought the brouchure from Shiny-Hiney showing cost, stlye and design. Shiney-Hiney only gives you the LED circuit board and circuit. You need to replace the light bulb with the new board and hope you don't get a leak. RodWorx has an all-enclosed unit. I bought them both for only $59 and they set you up with a new flasher also for only $18. Saved 36 bucks going this route." ~~ Jake "V-6 Fix Modelman" Groby

GM Photo Store -- Pretty neat stuff! They have some cool Task force Big Bolt pics too! ~ glamis4x4

Progressive Automotive (Columbus, Ohio) built a frame for Russ Sweet's 1936 Chevy Low Window.

A big discussion on car covers

Robert Giles was looking for a fitted cotton cover to fit his 1955.2 Shortbed Stepside. "I bought a cover at Hershey that is made out of man-made material that I'm not happy with. "Back East" car covers from Irwin, Pa. must be out of business. They made custom cotton covers."

"One place to look is at your neighborhood boat dealer. Every city will have someone that makes boat covers. As far as I know, they are all custom made. My Father-in-law was in the boat upholstery business and I had to help him from time to time. I had to deal with several companies that would come out and measure each boat and sew a perfect fitted cover. I am certain they could do the same for any car/truck." ~ Jim "Big Chevy 3600" Dunkin, 1951 Chevy 3/4-Ton Longbox

"Try California Car Cover Company for the cover you seek." \:\) ~ Kirk "41 Chevy" Culver, 1941 1/2-ton

"I've got a California Car Cover on my AD. It fits like a glove and shows no wear after two years of use." ~ Waldo53, 1953 3100

"Try this place. They are actually the supplier for California Car Covers and other glossy catalog vendors ... and cheaper. They have thousands of patterns. I was even able to get a perfect fit Noah car cover for my '61 Studebaker Hawk without any problem. Murphy's Motoring Accessories, Warren Eulgen, PO Box 618, Greendale, WI 53129, (414) 529-8333 / 1-800-529-8315 ~ Lee A, 1965 Chevy C-10

The Third Annual Stovebolt Reunion, Kansas City
Our first great story from Cletis ~~ hope more to follow !

What? Are you crazy? Travel 1,325 miles in a 51-year old truck?

By Charlie "Cletis" Hardin
Bolter #1113
1953 Chevy 6100 / 1956 Chevy 1/2-ton Stepside

Actually, my wife June didn’t say that. She’s been with me long enough to know I’m crazy enough to try it. But I prefer to call it "being adventurous."

In 2006, I towed my truck to the Midwest All-truck Nationals in Riverside, Missouri. Where’s the adventure in that? Laid back, CD blasting, AC cooling, cruise control set, Powerstroke diesel purring. My buddy, Joker, was cruising right with me in his 1952 Chevy truck with the 235 purring, window down, straining to hear the CD over the highway noise, getting a trucker tan on one arm. And he had a bigger grin on his face than I did. Here's Joker kissing Red Ryder upon our arrival in KC that year.

OK, so this year, I declared, I’m driving the ’56. Actually, the reason I didn’t attempt it in 2006 was my differential bearings were shot. I remedied this by installing a 3.07:1 Spicer rear end from a ’59 GMC. OK- road gears! While I was at it, I completely re-built the brake system using a dual chamber master cylinder.

Ready for the road -- Read on

We've been exposed!
This was a nice surprise

Steve "Builder" VandenBerg ran across this as he was surfing the Internet! The November 10th issue of Hemmings eWeekly (a product of Hemming Motor News) has The Stovebolt Page listed on its cover for TRUCKS!! (By the way, the eWeeky is free, if you want to sign up!) The info (below) is a little out of date (and we're not so sure about the "neat apparel") but the write up was very cool and we are honored! Stovebolt Stalwarts!! Someone design us a t-shirt!!

"For some folks, nothing quite soothes the ears like the bubbly, metronome rhythm -- or, as some prefer, the barely muffled bark-that beats from the exhaust ports of a Chevrolet Stovebolt six. The legendary OHV straight-six found a place in Chevy and GMC trucks well into the 1970s, including such famed pickups as the Chevrolet Cameo and the Advance Design rigs of 1947 through 1954. As you might guess, there's a huge community that loves Stovebolt-powered trucks, and they've got an online place to gather, appropriately named The Stovebolt Page.
"The breezy site, Stovebolt.com, describes itself as a "virtual garage," and the content certainly delivers. There's an online swap meet, a discussion forum, loads of tech do's and don'ts, a gallery with more than 1,200 stories and photos submitted by Stovebolt stalwarts worldwide, and nearly 500 Stovebolt-related links. Plus, there's an online mall with a lot of neat artwork, apparel and more. If you're into these great old haulers, stop by and you'll be just golden. - By Jim Donnelly

We love to hear from our Peeps

If I see somebody down on their luck, like a street person, I will buy them a sandwich and coffee. As far as the Bolt goes, if you sell stuff (like I do) the right thing to do is give back something. That way it's much easier to look at yourself in the mirror every morning. I guess it's just a sign of my upbringing. I have had our guys on the Bolt buy my stuff just because of that. They see me giving back so it works both ways. ~~ Steve "JIMBO59CHEVY" Giminiani
