New Stuff -- December 2006

It's a "Never-ending Newsletter"

In This Issue

The wreaths above -- some 5,000 -- are donated by the Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine. The owner, Merrill Worcester, not only provides the wreaths, but covers the trucking expense as well. He's done this since 1992. A wonderful guy. Also, most years, groups of Maine school kids combine an educational trip to Washington, DC with this event to help out. Making this even more remarkable is the fact that Harrington is in one the poorest parts of the state.

It Ran When I Parked It - Winners!

We had 47 entries for this year's It Ran When I Parked It photo contest, and some really darn good ones. Some hysterical.

Judging was laborious but handled with calculating detail. The voice of motorheads far and wide for The People's Choice Award was tallied by the two beauties above.

So, you need to know who won? Read on ...

Rest easy, sleep well my brothers.
Know the line has held, your job is done.
 Rest easy, sleep well.
Others have taken up where you fell.
The line has held.

Peace, peace, and farewell.

Looking at Stovebolts month after month

We just finished the Second Edition of the 2007 Stovebolt Calendar. So far, there are three to choose from. (We still will put together the IRWIPI calendar and a working bolts one.)

The First Edition Old Truck Calendar -- images are 8.5 x 11 full bleed dynamic color. When hung, the calendar measures 11 x 17. Printed on high gloss 100# paper with wire binding, it lays nice and flat against the wall.

Check out the beauties in the First Edition

Our first BIG calendar -- the images are 11 x 17 full bleed dynamic color. When hung, the calendar measures 17 x 22. Printed on high gloss 100# paper with wire binding, it lays nice and flat against the wall and makes a BOLD statement.

Check out these great trucks in the HUGE calendar

Tech Tips!   Ahh ... Christmas Spirit

That T-5 throw too long ?

You've tossed the original 3-speed in favor of a more modern manual tranny with more gears (and more speed!), but it seems like you're reaching all the way across Kansas to get to 5th gear!

Here's John Sandoval with an easy mod -- save your bucks -- don't go to the speed shop for one of those high-dollar fancy short-throw shifters! You already have everything you need to...

Well, if it isn't Jolly Ol' Saint Stovebolt himself. If you haven't been to this part of the site, you might want to grab your glass of holiday cheer and head on over for a few reads for fun and enjoyment. We've even got one for Christmas ~~

As If I Knew Christmas

SANTA IS COMING
IN A STOVEBOLT!

Well I've been sorta worried
About Santa Claus this year
'Cause we live way down south
And it didn't snow down here
But I'm telling you not to worry
Cause I just got the word
Everybody listen closely
And I'll tell you what I heard

Santa's comin in a Stovebolt
Instead of his trusty sleigh
He'll have a truck instead of reindeer
To carry him on his way
Cause the weatherman had some problems
He couldn't get snow you see
Santa's gonna come in a Stovebolt
When he visits you and me

Santa can't bring his reindeer
He'll leave them far away
But don't you worry 'bout him
He's gonna be here Christmas day
He's got a big red Stovebolt
With four-wheel drive and all
And there's gonna be a Merry Christmas
A Merry Christmas for all

That Santa is one smart Bolter! Thanks to Jim Bow for sending this in!

The Three Soldiers Statue Raffle

For those of you who might have missed it in last month's News page, Jake "Modelman" Groby has been kind enough to donate The Three Soldiers Statue that he built. The statue measures 14" high, 10" wide and about 4" deep. For each dollar donated to the site until the end of the year, the donor gets one chance.

Check the details from the November News page, including a sidebar about The Three Soldiers statue itself. And the NEW news is that Jake has puit together an additional statue so we'll have two winners! Awesome -- thank you Jake!

A reminder about posting pictures in the forums.

The reason we ask for a LINK to a picture (rather than posting the image itself):

     1) it affects our bandwidth (which is costly)
     2) it makes the page download slower (which really affects people on dial-up, and we've got a lot of them)
     3) some European users have to "pay by the byte" (and we don't want to do that to them ... especially after they've seen the image once already!)

You may have noticed, we are trying to include more pictures in the Gallery submissions, but even in there, we are using links to the pictures (which are larger), so that it will help out ... for those same reason. A side benefit for you post then, is that you can post a link to as big a picture as you like and it won't affect the rest of the posts in that thread!

We don't want to eliminate the image button altogether because there are occasions when we do want a picture in there. We usually leave an image up for a short while, and then switch it out to a link after we know a few people have seen it and the discussion has started.

     Thanks for your cooperation!

Thanks,
Stovebolt Staff

New Links

We seem to get a lot of hunting in the forums for "other message boards." Sometimes begging "Please start one for Dodge trucks!" Lovers of old iron, be it GM or some other type , we figured we'd include such lists (of good forums) on the Truck Sites link. Darin367 and Charles in CA came up with some F-Q-R-D sites to help the nephew of Jeff Nelson. So, if you know of some, send them in. We've got a few for starters (we lost all our others in the computer whip out).

Pakrat48 came up with a question about identify PPG Paint codes and came up with the PPG Auto Refinish site. Denny Graham said he's gonna study the site a bit. (Maybe he can come up with a helpful Tech Tip on it!)

Sorry for the down-time and a big Thank you for your support

Sorry that HQ lost all com with everyone. It was terrible (on our end.) We know a little about how stressful it is when the server is down, but our Stovebolt Geek sweats all that our by himself. This time it was our computer at HQ, and it was a mess. But thanks to some helpful Bolters (and some neaty computer magic by Zipper), we are back in the info biz. Stovebolts Forever! (Yea, yea ... and back-up too!)

A big thanks, yet again, to those who continue to support this site. Contributions for December:

From the mailbag

I am an American citizen that has lived in Santa Cruz, Bolivia for the last 12 years. After buying my 1939 Chevy JC Pickup truck, I surfed the net looking for information about it. I encountered a wealth of data on old Chevy trucks. Previous to this, I hadn't considered that the old Chevys had such a following. Thanks to this purchase, I have met several fine people over the net and have received an enormous amount of advice, help to find vendors, and technical tips. It seems that quite a family of Stovebolters has formed around the world.

It's funny, but when I bought my truck several Bolivians asked me why I had bought an old junky truck. But after showing them pictures of restored trucks on the internet, they were astounded at the beauty of the the restored trucks. It's already been quite an experience for me and I am sure I will continue with this. In fact, it has come to my attention that Bolivia is an excellent hunting ground for old Chevy trucks, because many were imported over the years.
