In May, I went to a Living History Day at Camp Withycombe in Clackamas, Oregon. What a great show. The Military Vehicle Collectors Club of Oregon was well represented with many vehicles on display. Tanks, Jeeps, Humvees, and many more interesting vehicles, including a WWII Japanese Tank and three German VW Kübelwagens. Many participants were dressed in period uniforms to match their rig, or camp set up. The periods covered from the Civil War up to present. One highlight of the day was getting to see an M1 Abrams Tank fire its massive turbine engine then take off across the field at 50 mph! It was awesome!
The Oregon Military Museum was also open for all to see, and what an impressive sight it is. Be sure to check out their website, it has some impressive information and a feature Catch the 'talkie' of their WWI Liberty Truck actually running.

SALUTING AMERICAN VETERANS
ARMED FORCES DAY CELEBRATION FEATURES MILITARY ENCAMPMENTS, RE-ENACTORS, AND HISTORICAL VEHICLES
In honor of America’s Veterans, Living History Day gives an exciting yet realistic glimpse of what military life was like. From military bicycles to battle tanks, from Liberty Trucks to amphibious “DUKWs,” families can take in a full day of the sights, sounds and smells of America’s military past at the Oregon Military Museum on Armed Forces Day. Authentic military campsites from the American Revolution to present day, museum artifacts, arms, equipment, ordnance, uniforms and restored military vehicles can be viewed. Visitors will meet re-enactors, living history enthusiasts and military vehicle collectors who are ready to share their expertise and knowledge about America’s military past. Included are Museum tours and a Black Hawk helicopter fly-over. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. “Living History Day brings to life an impressive collection of military artifacts and memorabilia,” said COL Tim Kelly, Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations. “Families and friends get a chance to appreciate the freedoms won by our service men and women by seeing how they worked and lived.” |

Over 25 years ago, when I was 15, I was at the base when they brought in two Japanese tanks that were found on a shooting range at Ft Lewis, Washington. The plan was to build one good one out of the two. I found out at the show that the tank on display is the final product of those two tanks! It was a pleasure to see it together!!
I grew up in Clackamas, near the base, and being a HUGE Military fan, I used to go down there a lot to visit and see the men. They'd give me patches and pins for my collection. Now at 40, although I never served, I am a huge supporter and fan of the military!!!!
