Jaspers was the only reman I would sell when I had a shop. If you have a warranty problem, which practically never did, they will pick it up & return it & pay the labor for changing it.

Ditto on Jasper quality. The only drawback is the price, which is far higher than other rebuilders.

I see that Kanter sells complete rebuild kits. I don't know about the quality but the one-stop shopping is a nice feature. My plan was also to buy the parts, farm out the machine work, and rebuild it myself--in a couple of years or so. But it looks like the engine may need to be rebuilt now and I've got another project car that needs to be finished and no space. I got the Chevrolet in November on a gamble (and some assurance from the seller) that it would be nearly road ready and wouldn't require much work. I like the idea of being able to drop in a new engine, though in a perfect world I would have rebuilt it myself.

I just started using a company called Performance Parts out of Ohio. They are pretty good on the prices and have very fast shipping. I will give them a call today and see what a kit would run. I picked up everything to rebuild a 283 last month and all the parts including a new crankshaft ran a little over $900. And this might be a stupid idea, but what if the forum started some "group buys" on parts. I also build weapon parts kits and the folks on the builder forums do the group buys and get some really good deals buying the parts kits in bulk. Anyway, I will give Performance a call and let ya'll know what they can sell a rebuild kit for a 235 for. And what kind of a deal if any they could do if more then one kit was purchased.

I gave performance parts a call and i did not realize that 235 engine rebuild kits are a bit harder to come by then some other engines. they are going to give me a call tomorrow and let me know what they come up with. I guess since everyone has been going to V8s in the classic trucks and cars the 235 rebuild stuff is a little harder to come by.

I got the call back on the rebuild parts for a 55 235 engine and I could not believe the price. I was told that everything EXCEPT the crank shaft and valves and springs and valve seals and guides would be $1500. And that is going with hydralic lifters that are $25.00 each. I guess if you didn't go with hydralic lifters you could save some money. I would never of thught that building a 235 these days would cost so much. But then again everything has gone up these days. unless the cost of rebuilding a 235 goes down, which I doubt it will the one I have will stay where it is. And thanks for starting this thread it has been a real eye opener for me.

This figure is consistent with the rebuild kits that Kanter sells (1500 for the parts for a 235). That price includes valves, valve guides, and springs. My only concern with getting an entire kit would be the source of the bearings. I've heard of premature failure in bearings that were manufactured in places like China and Mexico. I got a set of mains from Roberts Motor Parts in Massachusetts one time and they were painted black. I don't know if that's standard, but I know the lousy babbiting isn't. One of them was so rough it looked like it had already gone a hundred thousand miles. I sent them back and got a set from Egge (for a lot more money).
