My 57 Chevy truck has a bolt-on signal-stat turn signal unit. It has 8 (not seven) wires coming from the unit. I've identified the regular seven wires, but does anyone know what the eight wire may be used for? It is grey or light brown in color.

This unit has a green light on the end of the turn lever.

I had the same kind of signal unit on my 50 Chevy. Somewhere I found a wiring diagram online, but I don't remember where. This unit wires into the parking lights and brake lights I remember that. Mine was old and the contacts were corroded - but eventually I got all functions to work properly including the 4-way flashers. Does your have that feature? I will look for the wiring schematic.

Look at this here and the image or 2 previous and next.

On the H.A.M.B., there is an 8 wire diagram. See if this helps!

According to this diagram the eighth wire is for the park lights. The way I read this you don't need to replace the front sockets with dual filament. It will light the single filament bulbs when the headlight switch is in park position or flash the appropriate light when in 'turn'.

Pretty nifty switch, I'd say.

Charlie, you are reading the diagram right. It is a nifty switch and its still being made. I have several on hand for spares, but now the drivers are too lazy to lift their leg so they want the ones with the dimmer switch built in too.

Thank you for the info which was very helpful. I assume from the diagram that I can simply tape off the 8th wire (red with green tracer) if I decide not to use the 4-way flasher feature, right?

cletis, that's exactly how mine worked. I replaced the parking light bulbs with higher watt (brighter) bulbs.
DadsApache, the red w green tracer goes from the parking light terminal on the light switch to the 800 unit. I think if you left that off you wouldn't have parking lights...

The 8th wire has nothing to do with the 4 way flashers. As has been stated, it connects to the park light terminal of the headlight switch.

You can dead end the 8th wire if you want to. However, if you don't change your front sockets to to use dual filament bulbs you won't have front park lights because you have cut the power to them when you wired the turn signals to them.

Why not just hook the red/green wire to the park light terminal of the light switch and dead end the original park light wire? It will take less time than changing to dual filament sockets.

By the way, if you do it your way you will need to dead end the wires you cut from the park light sockets to prevent them from shorting out when you turn on the headlights because the switch will make momentary contact with the park light circuit when you turn on the headlights.

If you wire the 800 unit as shown in the schematic you don't have to change to dual filament sockets. smile
