Anyone have a suggestion for a 6 cyl. tach for a 292 with HEI ignition? I would like one that I can mount on the column. Thanks!

Auto Meter, Sun, and Stewart-Warner all have exellent tachs that will work just fine with your enngine. If you have a tach terminal on the distributor, that makes wiring even easier. I've seen on the newer styles where you don't even have to clip any wires to make them work with engines other than an 8 cylinder. They're using micro-switches now.

Can't help you with fabricating a case or flat mounting on a '66, but I used a tach from a Chevy Cavalier Z24 with V6.
I have a 292 with HEI. Fortunately the '67-'72 already has a location for a tach and it wasn't to difficult to modify.
Aftermarket is probably your best bet for a '66.

The Cavalier also had a great small diameter, FAT rim steering wheel. With power steering I don't need that wagon wheel size that was original. The original GMC horn button fit the Cavalier wheel with only a small knife trim on a tab.

I have that exact set up on my '64 C20. Most current tach's out there have a setting for either 4,6 or 8 cylinders. You may have to take the back of the housing off to find where you make that adjustment. It is easy to hook up on the HEI because there is a connecter already there marked "tach". It is there with the rest of the wires plug into the cap. You just have to connect the signal wire (the one that would normally go to the coil) to the connector. It works slick. Good luck!

I just had Custom gauges and a tach made by SpeedHut.com. for my 57' BelAir. They can make you a 6 cylinder 4000 RPM tach if you want. Everything is now 8K and I only wanted a 6K tach and they did it for me. Custom lighting, colors, faces, mounting options and memory too.

It was not as expensive as you probably are thinking. My tach, oil, temp and pressure gauges were about $450 which com[pares favorably with AutoGauge and others.
