I came across a pickup box trailer and I want to use the bed to install on my 66 4 wheel drive pickup. It is an 8 foot stepside bed with the tire cutout on the drivers side for the spare. Did the 66 have that bed for an option, or is it an earlier year bed? The tail light is on a bracket off of the stake pocket. Any info on this would be appreciated.

The step side bed came in 6 foot and 8 foot lengths. The difference in length is the space between the front of the fender and the front of the bed.

The spare tire cut out in the fender, was an option I believe.

The tail lights should be at the bottom of the stake bed pocket on each side.

The only difference I know of on the '66 beds, were on the ones that came from the factory with the reverse lights, they had a dimple in the fender where the lights mounted.

Is your '66 4x4 a long bed truck? Was it a fleetside or a stepside originally?

Beleave it or not they even made a 9' stepside version. I have the 1960 GMC model booklet and it clearly shows the differance.

I bet that is rare.

I am not sure what it was from the factory. It had a steel flatbed on it when I got it. I was just wondering if the stepside with tire carrier would be correct for 66?

Yes the long stepside could be had in 66 on a k 10. As could the optional spare tire fender. The tail lights should be lower. It could have came from the factory with out a bed. Cab and chassi

1966 trucks had back-up lights as standard equipment. If the stepside fenders have back-up lights it is likely to be 1966. The stepside beds were the same style from 1955-1966.

My first truck was a 1966 C-30 with the 9' box. Less than 3700 were built that year, so there are not very many around anymore. The spare was under the bed on that C-30.

For pictures of that C-30 click the bottom link on this post.
