Howdy folks.

The link above goes to my photo album at google, shows my maternal grandfather's toolbox and the tools inside.

He passed away in 1975, so it is a bit of a time capsule.

Nothing fancy in it really, but there are a few interesting pieces in it to me. Besides, I'm sentimental about it, even tho' I was a baby when he passed, it is cool to have his tools.

There is one tool in there, I'm trying to figure out what it is.. this one here:

Anyway, if you have any interesting tidbits to add about any of the tools, I'd love the read them.

Most of them just seem to be plain jane parts store type tools... but I'm merely curious as to how old some of them are.

This is the other real interesting piece, my dad says it is a 'tack hammer' :

Thanks... check 'em out and enjoy.

Pliers like those were originally used for horseshoes, but they have also been used for squeeze type hose clamps, and CV boots.

The tack hammer was/is used for carpet tacks, and furniture upholstery.

Aha - here is a newer version of the pliers: ear clamp pliers. They are used to squeeze an ear clamp

This was written:

The pliers are not hoof nippers. The are usually referred to as "end cutters".

They very well may be used for that. I guess it just depends on what line of work he was in. What is stamped on the side of them?

Winchester
trademark
2164-54

my mom said my grandmother kept 'em next to this old, old sewing machine she had, which from what she said, was probably and old foot powered one.

She also said that sometimes grandfather would take it with him to the woods when he was cutting a certain type of fence wire.

My grandfather was a kind of a maintenance man. He used tractors, graders and all sorts of equipment maintaining fences, gates and fire roads on this property where they raised timber and pulp wood. Anything that needed doing, basically... burning off brush, doing control burns, all that sort of stuff.

I have always heard of those cutters being referred to as nippers. As far as the tool box, aint it amazing the amount of tools the oldtimers had.And they did many, many big jobs with just that little box of tools.I remember buying my first good set of tools. It was 1957,and Sears had a sale on a tool set in about that size box. I remember paying $39.95 for the complete set.I used and abused those tools for many years, and yeah I still have them today. Course I have added many tools to the set and now everything takes up a three piece Tool cabinet in my shop. For many years I hauled the original set around in the trunk of my car,so it was always ready for a roadside fixup.A couuple of years ago I bought a set of Craftsman tools at Sears to take with me when I go to car shows and cruisins. They are all nicely arranged in a blow molded case, and I have never had a reason to use them. However I have loaned them out many times to guys with a problem at the local cruisin.
