Cool Old Truck

Kelly and Lionel Lewis'

1951 Chevrolet 3100

01 March 01

From Kelly

Hi Everybody! This is a 1951 Chevrolet 3100 that my son, Lionel (14 years old at the time) and I bought Feb 2000. These pictures were taken on the trip home from picking it up.
The story starts out that my son is a little bit of a throw back in time. He has always loved old things especially old cars and trucks. About a year and a half ago, he started bugging me about finding an old truck for him to drive when he gets his driver's license.
I have never had anything to do with old trucks but thought that this would be a great project for us to do as a family.
I looked for a while but most stuff that I came across was real rough. One Saturday night I picked up the local paper and looked in the classifieds. Here was an ad for a 1952 Chevy truck!! (It turned out to be a 1951 not A 1952). I called the guy and he still had the truck. He lived about 100 miles from Sandy, Utah where we live, in a place called Fairview, Utah.
The next morning I got up at 4:30 A.M. and drove the 100 miles to check it out. Needless to say I arrived too early. It was not even light yet. I waited until 8:00A.M. then went to the house.
The truck was in the garage. As soon as the guy opened the door, I knew that this was the truck for my son. I gave the guy $200.00 and said that I would be back the next Saturday to pick it up. I was so excited that I could hardly drive home. I had to stop at the first phone that I came across and call my son Lionel and tell him the great news.
The next week was the longest week of Lionel's life. Saturday finally arrived, "Truck Pick Up Day." The whole family took the 200 mile round trip to pick up the '51 Chevy. These are a couple of pictures that we took on the way home.
The Yellow Chevy is my daily driver. 1988 Chevy 1/2-ton 4X4.
And the top image is, of course: Lionel (14 at the time) and his "NEW" 1951 Chevy!!!!!!!
Since then we have totally tore this thing down for a complete restoration. We are currently about half way through the project. Lionel is now 15 and will be getting his driver's license in November 2001.
I have really come to love these old trucks over the past year and am trying to talk my wife into getting another one!
Take care and have fun wrenching.
